The Importance of Switchboard Maintenance
- Regular entries into switchboards by contractors can allow for loose terminals that are overlooked and can be unnoticed until its too late
- Confirming that the correct control gear is installed. Switchboards are usually manufactured for use with certain branded breakers and control gear. The use of different branded control gear can void manufacturer warranty and Australian standard practises.
- Clean out switchboard and chassis, dust is a contributing factor in fires and explosions. Dust is an unknown conductor of electricity due to its moisture.
- Confirmation that protective cover panels and locking mechanisms are in place and working correctly.
- Confirmation that aging 3 phase chassis has all of its insulation intact, not showing visible signs of cracking or breaking away.
In most cases insurers will request for you to get a Thermal Image Scan in order to confirm compliance of commercial type switchboards. In some cases proof of annual scans can reduce insurance premiums.
Overall scans ensure due diligence for building and tenancies, so in an event, blame on building owners and managers can be reduced. Scans also show up hot points, to help with risk averse and are an important factor in electrical preventative maintenance.
