The Rules Around RCD Testing in Commercial Properties.
Compliant and correctly manufactured RCDs are a device which can save your life in the event of accidentally electrical fault or damage. For example a worker is working on a conveyer belt and unbeknown to them the supply cable to the device has earthed on the machine, as soon as the live current makes contact with the earthed machine it makes a change in current flow and causes the RCD to trip.
Most RCD safety switches will trip in 30 or less milliseconds of detecting the change in current flow/leakage
To ensure that the RCD Safety Switches fitted to your workplace/construction site perform correctly, they must be tested at regular intervals. AS/NZS 3760 2010 recommends that each RCD be tested every 6 months or if using a portable RCD, a push button test should be performed before each use by the operator.
